La lucha del cambio climático está teniendo una influencia decisiva en la tributación del automóvil, dado que el sector del transporte constituye la principal actividad contaminante en España. El Impuesto municipal sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica es un tributo directo que grava la titularidad de vehículos aptos para circular por las vías públicas. Sin embargo, la Comunidad Autónoma de Cataluña y la Comunidad Valenciana han creado el Impuesto sobre las emisiones de dióxido de carbono de los vehículos de tracción mecánica, un gravamen directo de las emisiones potenciales de cada vehículo, por lo que se plantea ahora el futuro del tributo municipal. The fight against climate change is having a decisive influence on automobile taxation, given that the transport sector is the main polluting activity in Spain. The municipal Tax on Mechanical Traction Vehicles is a direct tax levied on the ownership of vehicles suitable for driving on public roads. However, the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and the Valencian Community have created the Tax on carbon dioxide emissions from mechanically-tracted vehicles, a direct tax on the potential emissions of each vehicle, which is why the future of that tribute.
